Conclusion of Topic

I am aged 20 and I am female.
I am currently studding joint HONs Philosophy and Politics
I have found that the subject 'Being Bad' relates well with Philosophy 'Critical Thinking' because i have to assess the information that comes from the internet and not all sources are reliable.
The topic on this subject is brilliant. I especially liked the topic on Body Modification because i am now more aware of things like wings caps and tattoos. I think that the historical context of where tattooing originated from and how western society stripped most of these developing country's. I felt embarassed to be even associatde with this country.

Response to: Triple being bad (Transgender/modification)

Mario,http://triplebbeingbadblog.blogspot.com/
I did not actually get a chance to go that seminor but i found what you had to say about the issue very interesting.
In my opinion what people want to do with their body is entirely down to the individual but i do think that people with sexual origin issue need to have theropist to explain some of the possible reason why they may feel a dettachment from their gender type because in the long run only a small proportion of Transgendered people can live a full and progressive life in their new form.

I watched a programme on Channel 4 which 'Homathedites' (born with both sexes) in India and the group as they were called had isolated themselves away from people and created their own little community seperate from everyones judgements.
The point i'm trying to make is that although these men and women are becoming socially acceptable alot of the time they are still not happy.

I personally don' t have a problem with Transexuals because at the end of the day we are all people.

Response to: The Truth (Religion)

http://standard-knowledge.blogspot.com/the Truth.
The way that you talk about your religion is so meaningful to me. I love to see people who are religious and say that they are religious actually acting on those words.
I have been brought up in a Christian/ Catholic household. When i was younger i was dedicated to my religion and to my extended family but as time has gone i seem to have lossed touch of what it means to be religious and pround.

In my house religion used to be forced on us. I had to go to Bible studies, Junior quiors and religious festivals. I think that now that time has moved on a bit and i have more independence i hsve the freedom to choose whether or not to continue with my practice.
I am on of those people unlike yourself i am an occasional pariscipant in religious practise but i give my thoughts to God all th time i can feel his presence

Response to:Natalie Watkins (Abortion)

Firstly i would like to say that although you are supporting arbortion to some extent the choice of image was less sensitive to the topic (a embryo in a jar).
Besides that i would like to futher a couple of things that you said in your blog. I'm not sure if this was your idea or that you read it somewhere but i don't think women see aborttion as another form of birth control for two reasons it is a health risk as women tend to loss a lot of blood during the procedure and secondly because it is emotional.
I have very strong views about the whole abortion issue. Yes women have choices, Yes women have rights but women abuse their liberties especially mature women because i am assuming that they're wiser and understand the implications of their action. Younger girls from age 12-16 should have regular sex education on contraception and to stop making sexual intercourse a tabboo in society. Girls are more likely to tell someone close to them that they are pregnant rather than the school councilor because they feel embrarassed.

Response to:M6 Straight (Infidelity)

I like you to think about the comments that you have made.
In my opinion not all affairs are sexually orientated. If you have watched 'Sleeping with the Enemy', the wife only afraid of her husband and the affair was refuge from her troubled marriage. The man that she got involved with was a comfort to her rather than lust.

Don't get me wrong I agree that being unfaithful in any type of relationship is wrong but I want you to look at the other issues surrounding 'why' people choose to commit Infidelity.
Further more your point about Infidelity being common in western society I think is wrong. I think you are misinformed about what love is. If you love someone else regardless of you situation (married) you will pursue the person that you are in love with.
What do you mean by the NORM?
Do you really believe that some people see Infidelity as the norm?
I believe people in some cultures agree to multiple partners but that is as far as it goes. I think that if you have ever been cheated on you would have a better understanding of this issue. Speaking for experience if you really and truly love some one you learn to cope but you never condole this behaviour.

Response to: Jay-being-bad.(Prostitution)

I agree that Prostitution is increasingly common in Britain and other parts of the world. I think that Prostitution is badly represented in the media but i don't think it has been accepted in society. There is still a 'dirty' stigma attached to it which does not help those women that you talked about who see it as an easy way to support their family.
I like the way that you have shown both side of the industry and not just been critical of prostitution. I hope that others with less open minded views will see that we such encourage vulnerable women to seek help rather than turning to the streets for help. Women are vulnerable especially when it comes to 'PIMPS', they just want the money and will allow women to be raped and beaten. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/magazine/story/0,11913,1306267,00.html
Fathering your point about legalising Prostitution, like Amsterdam has is a great idea because at least that way the girls would be safe and regularly checked for aids which is a growing risk for Prostitutes who work on the streets.

Dominatrix

Refer to this site for an article about the Dominatrix and the Submission http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/4271098.stm

For many people sexual pleasure is fundamental and by any means it should be fulfiled.
The practice of Dominatrix is all about the power relationship between the people involved and accepting the postion given to you.
This type of activity is used to replace the feeling of disintachment with society and other people. Quite often you will find male professionals of large company release stress via this actively and tend to incorporate it into their lifestyle.
Women usually take the role of the Dominatrix and the men tend to be the Submissive. The role reversal exsist because in society the man is seen to be dominate and powerful person within a relationship. This eases the pressure of the common association of macullin male and therefore balances out his emotion.
Please don't get me wrong this activity is commonly associated with the descripton above but more recently couples are opting for this type of pleasure because it is exciting and improves their selfesteem. *more to come.

There has be situations where the act of pleasure means harming one another such as soffication, cutting, burning and rough sex which are all meant to be done as a form of pleasure but result in perminate damage or death. Why do people seek extreme methods for pleasure?
*more to come.

Ha Ha!! It's not funny. (Comedians)

Comedy strives to get the audiences attention through jokes which are meant to be followed by laughter to show that what was said by the comedian amused you. However some comedians can get this very wrong and are not amusing but are vulgar, sexist, prejudice, racist and exaggerate stereotypes to the point it can be offensive. Not all comedians have to be any of these things but unfortunately a small proportion believe that they do and get it ever so wrong.
I had a lecture on Comedians and the one thing that shocked me was the fact that Comedians don't hold any opinions about the topic that they make jokes about.
How can this be true i thiught to myself, especially when some jokes are racially motivated and not about their own race.
The lecturer also informed us that things that we consider the taboos of society like; burps, sex, being common etc. Are the very reason why jokes are so funny. Things increase the boundaries of our humour because is seen as the 'wrong' thing
I do not find stand up comedians not very amusing but i do enjoy TV shows with comic' in them. I think this adds to the humour because their jokes are in a more realistic situation.
I used to enjoy Absolutely Fabulous , Gimmy Gimmy, and Vicar of Dibley.

Animal Testing

Every year, nearly 100 million animals die in research laboratories at the hands of curious scientists who perform inaccurate tests on animals. Before these animals die, they are routinely burned, scalded, poisoned, starved, given electric shocks, addicted to drugs, subjected to near freezing temperatures, dosed with radioactive elements, driven insane, deliberately inflicted with diseases such as cancer, diabetes, oral infections, stomach ulcers, Syphilis, herpes, and AIDS.

How can we agree that this form of experimentation is acceptable, if we would never agree to it being on human subject?

The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) is a small, non-profit center. As part of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, who are dedicated to improving health for both people and animals?
This organization is proof that there is alternative to the use of animal in our efforts to improve medical intervention of life threatening diseases. RF Halliwell, PhDUniversity of the Pacific have come up with a new method.
Neural Stem Cells may revolutionize the treatment of human disease and the discovery of new drugs. Stem cells might ultimately replace animal–derived tissues for scientific experiments. Stem cells are self-renewing with the capability of forming any cell type, tissue or organ in the body. Stem cell-derived neurons (SCNs) can now be grown in vitro allowing their properties to be studied but currently there is little data establishing their functional properties which is why some researchers still prefer animal testing.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/features/july-dec06/animal_10-04.html

Practical arguments
Animal testing has helped to develop vaccines against diseases like rabies, polio, measles, mumps, rubella and TB. Antibiotics, HIV drugs, insulin and cancer treatments rely on animal tests. Other testing methods aren't advanced enough. Operations on animals helped to develop organ transplant and open-heart surgery techniques.

Moral arguments
Human life has greater intrinsic value than animal life. Legislation protects all lab animals from cruelty or mistreatment. Millions of animals are killed for food every year - if anything, medical research is a more worthy death.
I maybe bias in my beliefs because i am a animal lover but i would not wish any harm on any living thing for if i knew that there were alternative methods available. Think about the products that you buy because it not only medicine which animal testing is used but cosmetic and beauty products as well. How 'BAD' do you feel knowing that unnecessary harm was cause to animal in the effort to keep you beautiful.

Conscious about your weight never let it get the best of you.

The media make me feel really angery at the way they advertise and over glamourize ultra-thin women. Young girls are very impressionale and tend to fall victim to the glamour world of fame, fortune and flare. This make girls vulnerable, insecure and obsessed.

Magazines work with celebrates to enhance their look sometimes using CGI and studio buffing equpiment so that the women have a perfect look.

How hard for misbehaviour

'Smacking' is becoming ever so common in many households as a way of keeping children under manners.
I was smacked as a child and it has not done me any harm, but there is always the question of whether it was necessary?
I have spoke to friends to a lot of my friends about the times that they could remember being smacked for something and from what i have been told it was essential in their upbringing. My friends believed that knowing that there were consequence to their actions made them less likely to get up to mischief because they want to get 'beats' as it was called when i was younger.
I read an article in the Independent were a Politian critical of child disopline in the light of smacking a child. The arguement was that it is hard to distiguish between abuse and the occasional smack on the rest. His main concern was that alot of child abuse has been overlooked becaause the child doesn't appear to be in any discomfort but to a child the illtreatment that they are recieving is 'normal' when it is not. According to the Politian he hope to clamp down on this by making it public.

Drug Dealers

Poverty and drugs
A Cambodian street child is sniffing glue as part of his routine practice. Poverty, family breakdown and other family problems have deprived these kids the schooling opportunities. They are obliged to roam the Phnom Penh streets day and night for a living and end up joining the Bang Thom or Gang kid groups. Adult drug addicts as well as glue sniffing addicts are estimated at thousands in Cambodia.

If you have you ever taken drugs or know any one who has ?

I've never taken hard drugs myself although i have smoke some 'Weed' slang for Marijuana. Now that i have read alot more about the effects of Class A & B drugs not only to the individuals sanity but to their family and friends. Drugs are distructive and can have life threatening affects.

In South London were i live drug users and dealers are very popular in my area and it makes you feel uncomfortable in the evening because they beg . I sometimes feel guilty and give them money knowing that their only going to feed their habbit . Its sad thing that i've had to witness.

I think that they need alot more help from the local authorities such as the NHS and the Police.

Being too Religious

Religion has existed for centuries now and is reason why in Britain we have the laws that we do. A good example would be in Catholics’ use of the 10 commandments in the Bible which several things on of which are......
"Thou shall not still, Thou shall not harm thou neighbor”
Theft is against the law even today and so are crimes of physical abuse. Religion is therefore a good form of social cohesion and unity. If you understand religion in this way it will be to be a positive aspect of your life. However have you ever encountered an individual preaching in a public place about how we are all sinners and that we all need to seek the Lord’s guidance so that we can be saved. I'm sure at least once in your life time you have come across those people who feel that there religion is superior to others and if not are people out there who believe that this is so.
Some religions such as Judaism does not permit the integration of people from other
religions because they believe that it is unessescary to mix with people who don't live their life the way they do because it may lead to temtation.
Do think that this type of separation of faiths is expectable or just misunderstood?
Consider religious groups such as the Jehovah Witnesses who will go to areas and knock on people’s doors telling them that their way of life is unsanctified and they need to change the error of their ways.
Do these types of method of religious fellowship promote unity, well to some extent but the point is the method used by these good are intimidating or isolating. So from this perspective religion is a form of social control. People have boundaries and limitations.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/christianity/beliefs/
Religion used to be an integrative force today in 2007 we see it separating society. An example of this would the case of Muslim veiling. People now fear what they can’t see. In this case a face. The veil has been accused of adding terrorism. The media aid society’s ignorance of religions and produce a distorted view of the truth. Religion should not be a matter of prefrence but a matter of understanding and exceptance of others.
Please note that the image above dose not relect my views but that of some ignorant individual. It is just an example of religious discrimination.
Please visit this site i find it very settling to read and relates to the topic of religion.

It's just a little White Lie!

Why is that people are so casual about lying?
Lying is something we tend to do unconsciously that is one of the reasons why we do it so often.
An example of this would be when your boss asks you why you are late. Your response tends to be it was the traffic, car problems, lost your keys etc. The common excuse for being late but nether the less these are still lies.
You may ask so why is this such a bad thing?
My response would be that lying in any form or for any reason is bad because you are deceiving the person that you tell the lie to. I will also put it to that lying only makes the issue lied about worst because you have to keep lying in order to make the original lie believable. For some people lying is a bad habit 'compulsive liars'. These are individuals who just can't help but lie it is just something they do. These types of people may lie for pity or praise and even just to entertain people when they have nothing interesting to say.
I personally hate people who lie i have lied before but I make a conscious effort not to. So for all you liars out there grow up and get responsible for your actions.

Racism

Racial hatred is when people from one race discriminate against those of another.
Why is this?
I believe that racial hatred comes from a lack of knowledge and understanding of different races.
Education is fundamental in developing a better understanding of multiculturalism and acceptance of other races. We need to look only at the people as an individual rather than the colour of their skin. I personally don't find it expectable for anyone to mistreat people because of their racial background.
We are all people with individual qualities and appearances.
When i was in primary school i experienced racial hatred from several white boys in my class.
I was very mature about the situation dispite the vulgar names that they refered to me as because my mum had taught me the saying
"sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"
I am very proud of my colour and and appreshiate others.
I think that racsim is just to do with ignorance.

Modern art/Graffiti

Street art is a form of expression. It is usually done to express feeling about political issue, the loss of a love one, racial awareness, ethical issue and war.
Graffiti is the common term for spray painted work in the public domain. Popular locations for art work are train stations, estates, markets and underpasses. These types of locations are preferred because it has a larger audience and will receive the response that the artist wants.
Graffiti is seen as a bad thing because it defaces public property. Youth culture is also a reason why graffiti is not appreciated as many young people use the method to promote gang culture and distasteful squiggles on buses and shop fronts, this vandalism and not art!

prostitution

What is Prostitution?
Prostitution is offering your body in exchange for money. This act can occur either within a property or on the street to attract punters (male buyers). This act is commonly associated with women of all ages and even as young as 12 years old in some cases.
Prostitution can be an exploitative line of work as many women tend to rely on 'PIMPS' to look after them and protect them against violent punters. Prostitution tends to attract women who are vulnerable due to extreme drug addictions, poverty and homelessness.
Many Prostitutes don't enjoy their jobs but feel that there is no alternative method for them to earn money quickly. Prostitution is often the last result in many cases.

Why is it such a big issue in society?
Prostitution is part of the 'sex industry' and it feeds crime like burglary, shop lifting and drug dealing. Prostitutes will dominate a small area so that they have a regular amount of punters. Prostitutes are prone to sexual transmitted diseases because they often will not go to the clinic to get seen for fear of judgment but in doing this they increase the health risks for the punters and themselves. Diseases such as Gonorrhea, Syphilis and HIV/AID are a higher risk to prostitutes because the have multiple partners and may use un-sterilized needles for drugs. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/A434701
http://www.avert.org/stds.htm

The common assumption is that the sex industry is dominated by female worker; well male prostitution is just as common as female prostitution. Men are seen to be less vulnerable but it is much harder for men to get work because not many females will look for men on the street they would prefer Brothels or Escorts because it is seen as more classy. Some men will settle for same sex work because they need the money.

The government has mentioned legalizing Prostitution so that women will feel safer in a controlled area or location under supervision. This would hopefully reduce the crime as well because the women would be paid correctly.

The 'butt' of the Joke

In my opinion i think smoking is a pointless exercise. I used to smoke occasionally back in my school days but did not pick up the habit. I'm not actually sure why i did not become addicted to smoking but i think it was a combination of things. I HATE the smell, the expense on my pocket money and the fact that i did not enjoy it much. I guess i was just young and nieve and follow the trend. I'm a very big supporter of the smoking ban because smoking causes alot of unnesscary health risks such as lung and heart disease and Bronchitis which cause immense suffering and discomfort. A large proportion of my family smoke and it worries me because i know that the risk of death is greater for them and for me as a passive recipitant of their habbit.

I had lecture on the topic of smoking which explain that from about the (1970's) smoking was more of an elitest which gave the connations of class so in affec smoking bacame classy. The media than ran with this idea and used it to advertise smoking in a glamourous way. You will now find smoking in movies where gangsters or protagonist would light a ciggerett as relief at the end of a dramactic scence that then gave smoking satus. It's cool to smoke. The desirability of smoking has over turned what it now means to socialise with others. Common places to smoke are in bars, resturants, coffee shops and even whilst driving. Every 10 second someone dies from smoke related illness but yet even figures like these don't fase smokers. What i would give to be able to go into a bar or club and leave not smelling of other people smoke. For those who can relate with me the discusting lingering smells that sits in our hair. I asked a friend why she smokes and this was her response:

I don't think there is a cut explaination for the reason why i smoke but what I can say is that I enjoy it. I supose it can be pleasurable at times. I Think what I most enjoy about smoking is how I makes me feel. I feel more calm and relaxed when I am smoking. I wouldn’t say that I am addicted to smoking ciggrettes but I get ancious when I haven’t had one for a while. It’s just a comfort for me really

What i can not understand is that ciggerett boxes are now clearly labelled with health warning an yet people still choose to smoke.
Why would any one want to increase the risk of death? It's CRAZY!
I think that somking is one of those addictions like drugs addiction and alcholism where the implications will not become real untill they are suffering from a life threatening diease or near death themselves.

masturbation A quick fumble or the forbbiden Jungle?

The assumption is that men masturbate more than women. This belief is due to the fact that men speak openly and freely about their sexual experience and activity. We have all heard of the common terms "Spank the Monkey, Chock the Turkey" etc. These terms are very explicit and violent considering that fact that it is meant to describe a pleasurable act.
I have found that in actual fact women are more sexually driven than men when it comes to self pleasure. A term i thought up myself is 'pleasuring the pleasure whole'. A more sensitive term for womens indulgence in self pleasure.
In a group discussion at University that i found that the idea of masturbation should be considered the primary sexual activity when compared with sex which could be considered secondary, as it involves compromise and does not guarantee satisfaction.
I found this idea very convincing because understandable masturbation is a more personal experience. The individual involved knows how to please themselves.
